Apple Tops In Sales And Innovation But Tails In Donations
Just recently Apple, world's tech giant, announced a third-quarter revenue of $45.4 billion, a significant improvement from last year’s $42.4 billion. Note the numbers here!
“With revenue up 7 percent year-over-year, we’re happy to report our third consecutive quarter of accelerating growth and an all-time quarterly record for services revenue,” Tim Cook remarked.Apple’s current net worth is way above what some countries will ever achieve by 2030. The skyrocketing sales are attributed to the hard and smart work that Apple puts to surpass the expectations.
Every year, its ever-loyal customers are demanding for something new, a new iPhone, iPad, and Apple industriously delivers. That does not to mean that other tech counterparts are dragging behind, but Apple goes a notch higher with its marketing strategies.
In this year’s Forbes list of The World’s Largest Tech Companies, Apple dominates by a large margin. Have a look at the statistics.
“For the past year, Apple saw $217 billion in sales, $45 billion in profit, $331 billion in assets and a market cap of $752 billion,” Forbes reckons.
Second after Apple was the South Korea-based Samsung,“…with $174 billion in sales, $19 billion in profit, $217 billion in assets and a market cap of $254 billion”
And then Bill Gate’s Microsoft was third in place with,“85 billion in sales, $16.7 billion in profit, $224 billion in assets and a $507.5 billion market value”Observing the figures above and looking at the profit margins, it is crystal clear that Apple is for sure making a fortune.
What of donations?
That said, in the world we live in, it is natural for big fortunate enterprises to give out donations to help the unfortunate. Depending on the amount they are willing to give out, companies are donating millions to help those in need. It is normal to donate amounts proportional to what you earn.
But when we have to rank the above top three tech giants on the merit of how much they donate, then interesting results come up. Now, the last becomes the first.
Similarly, when ranking on the merit of the ratio of what they earn to what they give, then the result is the same!
Microsoft, it’s founder alike, has been known to generously give out enormous amounts of its fortune to charity. Last year alone, Microsoft donated cash, software, and services valued at more than $650 million.
“In addition, Microsoft employees raised $142 million for 19,000 nonprofits, helping reach an important milestone,” said Microsoft, whose giving program has raised $1.5 billion since 1983.It doesn’t stop at that, the Microsoft Philanthropies details that millions have been donated with Bill Gates, Microsoft’s founder, donating $4 billion this year, the largest donation in the twenty-first century.
Samsung had its own share of generosity until issues with its head came up. It has since tightened rules on donation. The maximum Samsung donated to a group was 20.4 billion won(equivalent to $17.46 million) which is higher than what Apple has done so far. We still look forward to more charitable activities from Samsung in the near future.
On the other hand, Apple has not been left out. However, compared its net worth to its donations, then $2 million is like a tip of the iceberg of its potential, and that’s way below the expectations.
In the recent wake of the Hurricane Harvey, Apple has donated $5 million to Hand in Hand and Red cross. It has also made it possible for its mobile phone users to make donations that have totaled to more than $1 million.
In reality, those numbers are great. On the contrary, compared to what Microsoft has done, then Apple has a long way to go as far as being charitable is concerned. It is, therefore, true and with no shadow of a doubt that so far Apple tops in sales and innovation, but tails in donation among the top three tech giants.
